Memphis is More Than Elvis!

Besides, the street in front of Graceland is torn up with construction and is a pain to
get to anyway. So, here are some art suggestions!
Spouse and I take turns choosing our anniversary trip destination. This year was
spouse’s turn; he chose Memphis. AND, he’s actually responsible for probably the
highlight of the trip! We went to the Memphis Metal Museum. It was absolutely amazing to see what people can do with heat and metal. Part of our visit included watching demonstrations of smelting and iron work that turned a stick of iron into a beautiful leaf. Also bear in mind that we visited on a mid-July day in Memphis, TN so add weather conditions to the work they were already doing! Here are pictures of their incredible creations. The facility is in the process of moving to a new larger location, but after mid-September, you can witness their brilliance for yourself.
Another visit included the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. They are ALSO preparing to move to a new facility to downtown along the Mississippi River, so they have less of their collection on display than usual, but admission is free for the first two hours
when they’re open, and what they do have on display is lovely. I was inspired by
this work to try a couple versions of my own. One is finished; the other is in
progress. Here are other examples of what you can see.
Finally, I suggest Dixon Gallery & Gardens. They are not moving anywhere, and the name fits the description. It is a plant garden, a sculpture garden, and an art gallery. It’s
and wonderful art. Here are some pictures of our visit there.
Any of these three places would be good ones to let all that great BBQ rest AND avoid
Graceland construction. Lots of exciting things are happening in the art world in Memphis, and I can’t wait to go back!
